Swiss Army Knife
How viable do you think the 3-inch blade on the Swiss Army knife is for self-defense?

Re: Swiss Army Knife
Is this one of those comedy threads where I write the next funny line?

Re: Swiss Army Knife
You would have to be defending yourself from a pretty laid back attacker, but the saws on Swiss Army knives are really good. Ruined lots of junk and small trees with mine as a kid.

Re: Swiss Army Knife
I spent quite a lot of time at this forum
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/ Good info broken down by manufacturer and I think there are links to each manufacturers web site. Lots of good SD information |
Re: Swiss Army Knife
I thought that's what the cork screw and leather punch were for.
Personally I Own A French Army Knife:wink: ~Prag |
Re: Swiss Army Knife
There are definately better choices - that thing's a tool - not a weapon.
Get a Taser or some pepperspray if you cant get a gun. |
Re: Swiss Army Knife
Get a lockblade. Watch out for the blade folding back on ya. Try stabbing a phone book a few times with a swiss army knife. Wear a chain mail glove while doing so.

Re: Swiss Army Knife
Would my ColdSteel "SRK" be a good choice for defense?

Re: Swiss Army Knife
A guy tried to mug me in the stairwell of a train station in Connecticut with a knife. He was waiting behind the door into the stairwell. As I opened the door, he said, "excuse me, Sir". I knew he was up to no good standing behind the door in a dark stairwell... I sprinted up the first set of stairs and as I looked back he was following with a kitchen type knife in hand, yelling, "stop when I ask you a question". I had a back pack weighing about 45 lbs. on one shoulder. I swung it around and hit him. I had height and gravity to my advantage. He was not ready for that and tumbled back down the stair. I sprinted up another three flights and through doors into a crowd of people in the station who had no clue what just happened. I bought my ticket and went down the opposite staircase and under the tracks to the northbound platform. He then appeared on the opposite platform while I waited for the train. He started to stare me down and then pointed at me. I was so pissed off. I walked out to the edge and said, "Attention rail travelers: If your a regular on this line, that F'n a$$4... right there just tried to mug me". You should have seen a packed crowd of commuters heads swivel in unison." Talk about the power of the herd. He just looked at the sea of faces staring at him and started running down the platform.
So you won't have time to unfold a knife.... no thats the file... that's the can opener, watch it, i'll awl you good. BACK OFF, I HAVE TWEEZERS! |

Re: Swiss Army Knife
on the one hand a swiss army knife will play better in front of a jury if you have to cut somebody and you get prosecuted;
on the other hand, you're liable to cut your finger shanking somebody with it, pardon the pun; on the other hand, you dont want to be fencing with someone anyways-- the only sure way to use a blade in self defense is to make it so the other guy doesnt see it coming, in which case, a three inch blade is probably plenty |

Look there's plenty of knives out there to use for defense, but that's not one of them. While I EDC a Swiss Army Super Tinker in my back pocket, I also carry a Benchmade 551 as my choice for defense. Well made, not too expensive (I think I paid about $50.00) for mine. |

I repeat my point, which is that surprise and concealment are the decisive tactical factors when using knives, and secondly, that your security in life has less to do with your equipment than your brains and your ability to locate yourself in a socially secure environment where people watch your back. |
